Leslie Kaminoff on the regulation of teaching yoga

Leslie Kaminoff on Yoga Regulation

You may not have gotten the memo, but the legendary Leslie Kaminoff (who famously authored Yoga Anatomy and is the inspiration for how I approach yoga) is one of the most vocal critics of Yoga Alliance.

Leslie has been working as a yoga educator since 1979, and (in my mind) is the expert on how one should teach yoga so the practice is both effective and safe. You can imagine my surprise when I discovered how outspoken he has been about Yoga Alliance, who is widely regarded as the much-needed oversight body in an otherwise unregulated industry.

You can imagine my surprise when I discovered how outspoken he has been about Yoga Alliance, who is widely regarded as the much-needed oversight body in an otherwise unregulated industry.

You can imagine my even bigger surprise when Yoga Alliance released a video with him discussing the regulation of the yoga industry that comes on the heels of Yoga Alliance changing the acceptable use of the term "yoga therapy."

For those of you who haven't been following the story, Yoga Alliance has recently released new regulations about the use of the terms "yoga therapy" and "yoga therapist" for credentialed Yoga Alliance teachers and schools. This has become a hot-button issue in the yoga world.

Whether you're currently a yoga teacher or have interest in becoming one, I strongly recommend you watch this video. (Yoga Alliance won't let me embed it like I originally tried to do, so you'll actually have to go to Vimeo to watch.)
