Health and fitness resolutions are among the most popular, and lots of people have made the commitment to do more yoga in 2015. And why not? Yoga is a great way to calm your mind, increase strength, and enhance flexibility.
If doing more yoga is one of your goals for 2015, achieving your goal is within your grasp. Here are 6 creative ways to infuse your life with more yoga.
1. Tadasana at the grocery store
Waiting in line at the grocery store is a great opportunity to engage in a little tadasana. To outsiders it looks like you’re just standing there, but little do they know you’re engaging your core, rotating your thighs slightly inward, grounding with your feet, reaching high with the top of your head, and reaching low with your sit bones.
2. Waiting for the tea kettle
When I’m waiting for the tea kettle (which is a good 3-6 times a day at the rate I drink tea), I do a quick little sequence of standing poses: Warrior I, Warrior II, Triangle, Standing Wide-Legged Forward Fold, and then repeat on the other side. You can use this mini-sequence whenever you’re waiting for something at home. This doesn’t have to be restricted to waiting for the tea kettle.
3. Sitting in traffic
Sitting in traffic is a great time – perhaps the most perfect time – to engage in a little pranayama. Remember yoga isn’t just asanas, it’s also philosophy and breathing exercises. When stuck in traffic I like to do a little Dirgha Pranayama. Dirgha lowers my blood pressure and reduces my stress levels.
4. Yoga before bed
Traditional fitness experts will tell us not to do exercise before bed, but there are actually several yoga poses and sequences that can help you wind down for the night. If you just add yoga to your bedtime routine, you’ll be doing yoga 7 days a week.
5. Stop, Drop, and Yoga
My favourite way to get a little more yoga into my day is to Stop, Drop, and Yoga. I got this idea from the Instagram hashtag, although I don’t usually document my pose. Randomly throughout the day, take a minute and strike a yoga pose. It’s liberating and fun. From Tree Pose in the parking lot to Down Dog in the office, you’ll infuse your day with a little more yoga and a lot more fun. Get creative with it!
6. Join a yoga challenge
There are tons of awesome yoga challenges on Instagram, with more popping up all the time. Yoga challenges are a great way to meet and engage with likeminded yogis while sneaking a little more yoga into your day. Search the hashtag #YogaChallenge on Instagram to see what the latest challenges are.
Yoga Challenges usually involve a host (or two) posting a yoga pose for the day. You then take a photo of yourself doing the pose, and upload it to Instagram. Tag the hosts and tag the challenge. A lot of Yoga Challenges have prizes which are given away to a random yogi who did every single day of the challenge.
