Get started with a juice cleanse | 42Yogis

Juice cleanses are a popular detoxing and weight loss tool, and the trend has been sweeping the nation. Celebrities like Clinton Kelly, Jared Leto, and Salma Hayak have all tried cleanses, encouraging the growth of the trend.

Companies like Urban Remedy, Blue Print, and many others are making a name for themselves with their popular juices. La Vie Wellness in Soquel, CA has taken it one step further, and raised the bar with a cleanse built on probiotics — the healthy bacteria found in fermented foods like yogurt, kombucha, and kefir.

How do juice cleanses work?

The theory is juice cleanses work by helping your body’s lymphatic system get rid of toxins. Our body is constantly getting rid of toxins, but sometimes it needs a little help. The theory is juice cleansing will give your body the extra help it might need to help get rid of toxins.

Joe Cross, filmmaker, health advocate, and creator of Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead lost 100lbs, got off medication, and became overall healthier through juicing.

Does juicing really work? The evidence is anecdotal, at best, but I believe juice cleansing can work if it is done properly. If you use juice cleansing as a way to help get your body on a healthier track, I think juice cleansing can be beneficial. If you are going to use a juice cleanse as a way to “help your body” after a week long bender, you’re not going to be able to sustain the results. It’s important to come off the cleanse slowly and not suddenly eat a Big Mac the first day off your cleanse. In order to reap the continued rewards of juice cleansing, you should adopt a healthy eating style when the cleanse is over.

Getting Started

If money allows, you might want to opt for a premade cleanse. A lot of my friends have used Blue Print, and they love it.

Juicing can be expensive, and buying products like Blue Print or Urban Remedy might be out of the question. If you’re serious about giving juicing a go, you should opt for a juicer, or Vitamix, and learn to make your juices at home.

For a typical 3 day cleanse drink 6 juices daily, spaced every 2-3hrs. In between juices, drink a lot of green tea (unsweetened), and water.

If jumping in with both feet and all meals doesn’t sound very appealing, start by replacing one meal a day with juice. On day 2 replace two meals with juice. On day 3 replace 3 meals with juice. Your juice cleanse will begin on Day 3 when you’ve replaced all solid meals with juice.

The preparation is the same for each juice recipe. Wash everything thoroughly, and prepare your juicer. Pass the produce through the juicer. Serve chilled. Each of the following recipes makes 3 16oz juices. I recommend making your juices the night before you plan to drink them and putting them in the fridge. If it is inconvenient, you won’t stick to it.
