Whether you are experiencing physical pain due to injury or illness, you are tired of how slowly the process is moving. While you don’t want to hurt yourself, you can take some steps to speed up the process as long as you are doing so under a doctor’s supervision.

Make a Professional Plan

When you schedule your appointments with a specialist, like those with Southwest Florida Neurosurgical and Rehab Associates, express a desire to expedite your rehabilitation process. Keep in mind that you will still need to maintain reasonable expectations. If the doctor agrees that you can increase your efforts toward recovery, make a plan for doing so. For example, knowing how many more repetitions of a certain exercise you can do is helpful.

Make sure that you write your plan down wherever you can see it so that you can always keep your goals in mind. Write things down on the calendar that you keep your fridge. Schedule things into your phone so that you can get reminder notifications. Put inspirational sticky notes everywhere that remind you of your commitment to recovery. By doing this, you will be less likely to slack off and take a break from your plan. No matter how hard it gets or how much you may want an easy day.

Eat Healthy Foods

You might not think that the food you put into your body has anything to do with the rehabilitation process, but it does. Your food consumption could have a direct link if your injury was caused by an issue related to obesity. Eating healthier foods can help you to avoid it in the future. In general, however, when you consume healthier foods, you promote a healthier mind. Additionally, you will likely have more energy. A focused mind and an energetic body can help you to increase your rehabilitation process.

The term “healthy foods”, however, is very broad. Out of all of the healthy foods out there, you need to make sure that you’re consuming foods that are absolutely the best for you. These are called power foods. One of the greatest power foods out there is kelp and is packed full of calcium, magnesium and potassium. Other power greens for you to consider eating are kale, bok choy, and alfalfa.

Other power foods that your body may need are ginger root, mushrooms, healthy fats (such as avocado, walnuts or fatty fish), beets, and Swiss chard. You should make sure to include at least one power food in every meal as you are going about the recovery process.

Participate in Light Activity

While you do want to get medical clearance from your doctor before engaging in any activities, adding some light exercises to your usual routine can help to increase the speed at which you recover. For example, you may decide to start participating in yoga or to begin meditating on a regular basis. Yoga helps to keep your body flexible and helps to stretch out your muscles, which is important if your muscles have been cramping up as a result to your injury.

Other activities that you ought to consider are Tai Chi, swimming, and bike riding (not too fast!). Such activities can help you to rebuild your body’s strength. On top of that, they can encourage a healthier mind that is ready to take on the challenges of a faster recovery.

As you go about exercising, you might come across days where you just aren’t motivated—no matter how many reminders you are given. To help with this, ask a close friend of yours to hold you accountable. You can report to them once a week and tell them how many times you exercised. Perhaps they can even join you in your fitness endeavors. As we hold ourselves accountable to others, we are more inclined to hold up our end of the bargain and achieve our goals.

Challenge Yourself

Ask your doctor what you could be doing now that you are not currently doing. You don’t want to challenge yourself in harmful ways, so speaking with your doctor first is of utmost importance. Once you find out how you are falling short of your current capabilities, make it a goal to hit these benchmarks. You may even want to reward yourself with some extra television time or an ice cream cone when you accomplish these feats.

Practicing patience is important when you want you recover from your illness or injury. However, that doesn’t mean you have to reach a point of stagnation and stop making new goals for yourself.
