Imagine spending time in a room that helps you relax and soothe your mind. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? This is the idea behind having a personal Zen meditation space in your home.

It’s something that can steer you away from stressful thoughts and stabilize your emotions. Especially in this time of anxiety and fear from the pandemic crisis, meditation is more needed now than ever.

If you want a peaceful space in your home, here’s how you can create it with ease.

Choose a relaxing space

The space you meditate in needs to make you feel relaxed and at peace. This applies even before you start making changes to it. If a room is inherently relaxing, it’s going to be much easier to turn it into a Zen space.

The room should be as quiet as can be. Meditation requires that you’re separated from external stimuli, and having a quiet space is essential for this goal. Choose a room that’s far away from the street side of the home. Make sure there’s not a lot of traffic going through or next to the room. Calm and isolation are your goals.

Lighting is another important element for your meditation room. Natural light has been proven to cheer us up, which is why it’s recommended that you choose a room that faces the sun during the day. A room with a sunset view is acceptable as well, especially if you find yourself meditating in the early evening.

Keep it clean and uncluttered

To keep your meditation room clear of distractions, you also need to keep it clear of clutter. It’s something that distracts heavily from meditation and relaxation. A cluttered room leads to a cluttered mind, as they say.

The meditation space shouldn’t be set up in a room that has too many elements. You probably wouldn’t consider a home office viable for meditation, for example. It’s either going to be too cramped, or it’s going to remind you of work.

Instead, choose a room that’s mostly empty, save for some relaxing elements. You can also empty out a room and create a Zen space before you start meditating.

If you don’t have the space for an entire room, you can dedicate a corner. Perhaps build a small alter, and set yourself up so you’re facing the alter and not the mess in the rest of the room.

All you really need is a yoga mat or throw rug to create an ideal place to meditate. Throw in a pillow and you’ll have the relaxing atmosphere you need.

Bring a bit of nature inside

Nature is something we can’t do without. Even when we’re in the middle of a big city, surrounded by concrete, nature has to be all around us in some shape or form. This is why gardens and houseplants are such an important part of home design. This small slice of nature makes us feel relaxed and at peace.

This is something worth considering when creating your ideal Zen room. Plants create balance and add oxygen to the space, making it easier to get into a relaxed state of mind. Introduce a few potted plants all around the room. This will give the room a soothing atmosphere and provide you with the clean air that you need.

Other natural elements should be considered as well. Use cut flowers to add a wonderful scent to your Zen room. Jasmine is always a good choice. Fill a glass jar with sand and seashells to add a minute amount of beach atmosphere. The more relaxing natural elements you find, the better.

Add personal touches

Since this room is for your meditative needs, it should be designed to match your own taste. There’s nothing more soothing than being in a room that feels like it’s a part of you. Having a hand in creating the relaxing and cozy home décor will help make it even cozier and more personal.  This is why leaving your own touch on the room is so important.

Think about the elements you want in your Zen room. What kind of furniture should be featured inside? Make sure you make it sparse, as overcrowding the room won’t feel comfortable. Artwork is a very important touch. Add small statues and paintings that will decorate the walls. Nothing too big, as it might distract you. Choose art that makes you feel good, and you’ll have a Zen space that feels like it was designed just for you.

Create a soothing playlist

As we’ve already established, sound can disrupt your meditation and make a room a lot less viable for relaxation. On the other hand, sound can also be used as a way to bring relaxation. Certain sounds remind us of nature and that can be quite soothing. Birds chirping, flowing water, and wind blowing can put our minds at ease and make for even better meditation sessions.

Music is another element that can make your meditative space much more appealing.

For meditation, music without lyrics, such as hang drum music is recommended. Focusing on the words will take away from your relaxed state, and you’ll start thinking about the music instead of meditating and clearing your mind.

Choose tracks that are long and somewhat similar. If they can flow into one another without notice, this will help take your mind off the transitions and let you relax. It can be from any genre you prefer, or it could just be soothing ambient sounds of nature. As long as it helps you relax, it’s a good choice.

Conclusion

Creating the ideal zen meditation space in your home is not a very difficult task. You just need to recognize the elements that belong in your room and eliminate those that do not. As long as you apply some of the above ideas to your room design, you won’t have a difficult time relaxing and soothing your mind in this room.
