How Can You Impact Public Policy for Healthy Water Standards in Your Area?

Anyone who has been following the situation in Flint, Michigan knows that a lack of clean water can cause a public health hazard. In addition to impacting a resident’s short and long-term health, it may also make a town or city a less desirable place to live or raise a family. What can you do to ensure that everyone in your community has access to healthy water?

Run for Public Office

Running for city council or some other local elected post can put you on the front line of public policy. This gives you a chance to either create new policies aimed at protecting the water supply or the influence to push for change in the long run. The nation needs valiant, strong individuals to enact proper procedures and public standards.  Becoming one of those will help the community in many unforeseen ways. It may even make it possible to make people see the need for advanced water treatment facilities in your area.

Show the Effect of Dirty Water

You may want to conduct a study that looks at how dirty water impacts a person’s quality of life. For instance, you may want to learn more about how dirty or poisoned water impacts a child’s ability to develop properly. Do some research and educate yourself about the matter, so you will be in a better, more enlightened position to argue your strong points.  People follow those that know what they are talking about. There is always time to do this, as it is important and people will see it as an asset. You could also take a closer look at whether the water has microbes or viruses in it that could easily be spread.

Speak with an Expert

This is a great way to start your career in the public sector. Talking to someone that has earned a master’s degree in public administration can help you learn more about how the government works. It may be a complicated, nerve-wracking process, it must be understood to be changed. This is how you start to make effective change in the community in which you live, which is incredibly important to you if you want to affect change in the world around you. When working as a public servant, people need more than a good argument. They need solid evidence and data to back up their claims.  You have to be able to prove that clean water is worth the financial cost as well.

Go Straight to the People

Starting a Facebook page or some other social media movement can have an impact on what politicians think. People want to be involved more than you might think.  Facebook and other social media platforms are great venues for this sort of thing.  Gathering all together to make change is the most effective way of making positive changes in the community. Assuming that people are enthusiastic about their water, it wouldn’t be too hard to get hundreds or thousands of people to share your message each day. You may also want to contact traditional media sources as well to help bring awareness to your cause and to explain why everyone should care about this issue. Give people a reason to jump on the bandwagon and support the cause.

Clean Water is a Human Right

This may seem obvious, but some corporate executives, like the CEO of Nestle, do not believe this to be true.  Although this is a clear violation of human rights and common decency, in the land of the fees and home of the slaves (America) people do not seem to always care. This is very sad and is not right in any way, shape, or form.  When you are able to influence public policy for the better, you have the power to change these sort of things.  The individual has the power to change these sort of things, by utilizing the correct means of change. Take the time to educate yourself about these sort of things and help your fellow man while you are here in the world.

Without clean water, it is impossible to cook food, take a shower or brush your teeth. If you can’t go about these seemingly trivial tasks each day, your health could suffer tremendously. You could also lose your job if you smell bad or start losing your teeth. Therefore, it is critical that you take the lead in making sure that the water supply remains suitable for everyone to use.
