Finding Freedom: 4 Pointers for Managing Mental Health

Poor mental health can impact the entire body. It can make you feel tired all the time, and it can affect your weight by sudden losses or gains. Professional help is an option if you want a way to voice how you feel or begin taking medication for your mental health. However, there are a few self-care tips that you can try first that might be more of a benefit than seeing a doctor.

Get Some Rest

When people tell you to get some sleep, it’s for your own benefit. A good night’s sleep can refresh the mind and make the body feel alive again. When the body isn’t rested, the mind often takes the brunt as you begin thinking about everything in life and trying to focus on basic issues.

Try to eliminate caffeine or smoking before you go to bed so that it’s easier to fall asleep at night. It can also help to step away from electronic devices, as the blue light they give off hinders melatonin production.

Taking some time in the evening to meditate, de-stress and relax can really help you wind down and make your sleep more restful. If you feel you aren’t getting enough sleep at night, it’s not a bad idea to consider taking a nap during the day as well. Even those working full time jobs are provided with a few breaks. Working out a way to take some of your breaks together during the day can give you a great opportunity to go sit in your car and take a quick cat-nap. Remember, being well rested will help you be your best self.

Positive People

Surround yourself with people who will encourage you and do the things that are best for your health. Avoid negative people as much as possible.

There are support groups that you can join to talk to people who are experiencing some of the same issues that you have. Another idea is to get involved in the community by volunteering for an organization that you enjoy. The smiles that you receive can be contagious and make you want to smile more during the day.

Your coworkers are one of the most important sources of positivity you can have, since you spend so much time with them on a daily basis. Unfortunately, the converse is also true. If you are feeling picked on, rejected, or otherwise harassed by people you work with it can seriously impact your own self-image and self-worth.

It’s extremely important to take steps to correct the situation if you have co-workers who treat you poorly or are negative towards you. Sometimes speaking with your management can help, but in severe situations you might need to call in some sort of legal representation. Do whatever you need to in order to help yourself feel safe at work.

A fun way to improve the mental health is to pet an animal. Consider getting a puppy or a kitten to care for in the home. You’ll know that there is something that relies on you for food, water, and love, which can improve your self-esteem and overall mental mood.

Petting an animal can lower the blood pressure and make you feel relaxed while you’re holding the pet. Animals are often seen as a stabilizer so that people don’t have to rely on medications and other solutions.

A Breath of Fresh Air

Getting outside to enjoy the fresh air can boost the attitude. The fresh air is also good for the heart and lungs instead of being stuck inside all day. Vitamin D is known for boosting melatonin levels in the body, which can enhance the mood and help you sleep at night.

Being outside in the world can also help you feel a connection with nature, and bring peace to a hectic mind. You can begin with something as simple as taking a walk down the street or going to a park. If you feel you are ready for more, or you just want to get away from the hustle and bustle of it all, then you may want to consider taking a drive out into the countryside, doing a local hike, or even camping. Whatever works best for you is the best option.

No one enjoys the limitations of poor mental health. Instead of moping around at home, find an outlet for getting your feelings in the open such as journaling or talking to a friend. Spend some time for yourself so that you enjoy being you instead of focusing on the negatives.
