Becoming healthier is not always an easy process, but it will positively impact almost every facet of your life. A few simple lifestyle changes might be just what you need to shed a few pounds and avoid countless medical issues in the future. Here is a look at just four of the ways you can start down the path toward a healthier you.

Break One Bad Habit a Month

Whether it is drinking soda or smoking cigarettes, most experts agree that it takes around 21 days to break a bad habit. While you might still feel certain urges after three weeks, your mind will actually create new neural pathways during that time. As soon as you feel like you have completely kicked an old habit, you can then pick another bad habit you would like to break. Some other issues you might want to confront include snacking late at night, eating dessert, filling up on bread before meals, or dumping too much sugar into your coffee. Just make sure that you’re not trying to do everything all at once. Take it one step at a time.

Make Shopping Lists and Stick to Them

No matter how much willpower you might think you have, trying to avoid unhealthy foods at the grocery store often feels impossible, especially when you tend to shop based off of impulse. Instead of allowing yourself to wander around the aisles, you should make a very specific grocery list and then stick to the items that are on the list. After you have made your list, you can bring just enough cash to cover the healthy groceries so that you are not tempted to splurge on junk food.

When you do decide that you are ready for a cheat day, then you can take a moment to take a break from it. Don’t prepare for it ahead of time, though, by buying a whole container of ice cream.

Instead, just take the time to go to the store and pick up a single scoop for you to enjoy in that moment—not something that will be sitting in your fridge, tempting you. Doing this will help you to establish more self-control in your life.

Find a Physical Hobby

Because not everyone enjoys going to the gym, it’s important to find an activity that motivates and entertains you. Many city centers and community colleges also have classes specifically for residents who would like to learn new sports and hobbies.

On average, a healthy adult must exercise for at least 150 minutes per week, and so it’s important that you choose something that you plan on doing on a regular basis. Some of the other activities and hobbies you might want to consider include rock climbing, hiking, bird watching, gardening, and swimming.

If you don’t want to do it alone, then join or start a group that goes and does that activity together—this could be a great way for you to find mentors and meet new friends who will help uplift and support you in your wellness journey.

Take Care of Your Sore Muscles

One of the reasons why so many people stop exercising is due to sore muscles. While some soreness is perfectly natural, you should do everything in your power to recover as quickly as possible. Relaxing in a hot tub is one of the most effective ways to relieve sore muscles and improve your blood flow.

Spending a few minutes in hot water can also lower your blood pressure, reduce stress, and lessen arthritic pain. Those who have been diagnosed with any serious heart conditions should first speak with a doctor before sitting in a hot tub for more than a few minutes. Luckily for you, getting yourself to want to go and relax in a hot tub shouldn’t be too much of a chore as it is actually a very relaxing experience.

Just set aside the time after major workouts, marathons and other such activities that may be particularly taxing on your body.

It is never too late to improve your health, and you might be surprised to find out that your fitness goals can be attained within just a few months as long as you break this process down into manageable steps.

If you are still having a difficult time making progress, then you might want to find a fitness partner or two who will keep you motivated and accountable. These individuals can give you support when you needed it the most so that you do not lose momentum.
