Natural products are gaining traction in the marketplace, but are they really better for you? There are so many different products out there, how can you know which ones really are natural and will work best for you and your family.

From food to cosmetics to cleaning supplies, consumers are paying more attention to the chemicals they expose themselves to. While it’s good to be health conscious, it’s hard to know if all these natural products are truly any better for you and your family.

If you are wanting to go natural and use products you feel like are less harmful to you and the ones that you love, it is essential for you to make sure that the products you are getting really are as natural as they say they are, as well as if they really are even better for you at all. Are natural products really better? The answer is maybe. If you are considering switching to all natural products here are some things that you might want to consider first.

The words natural, clean and safe all sound wonderful, but according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), these terms have no legal definition. That means food and product manufacturers can use them to mean almost anything. The word organic does have a legal definition, and its use is regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Unfortunately, a product need only contain a certain percentage of organic ingredients to earn this designation.

The result is the production of goods that claim to be organic while still containing synthetic chemicals, making it difficult to know if a product truly is all natural. That is why it is a good idea to look at the ingredients listed on a product before buying it. That way you can check and see what it really is made out of as well as how natural it actually is. You can even do some research online to learn more about the product and how it is made.

A Chemical is a Chemical

Chemicals aren’t necessarily bad and many are natural. Take penicillin, for example. As doctors and those with an online masters of science in nursing know, penicillin is a natural chemical found in mold. Penicillin also causes potentially deadly allergic reactions in some people, even though it is a natural substance.

Chrysanthemums and other flowers naturally produce a toxic insecticide known as pyrethrum. Some mushrooms and plants are deadly if consumed. Many dangerous chemicals are found in nature, so you should never assume a natural chemical is a safe one. If you really want to protect your family it may be a good idea to do your research on different chemicals and find out which ones can be harmful to have in your home.

That way you know what to avoid every time you go to the store. Also, make sure that if you are going to have chemicals in your home that you store them in an area where your kids can’t get to them. That way you can know that they are safe from any chemical danger.

Interactions

Because chemicals interact with each other, you could experience a negative reaction from a natural product. Prescription medications and other natural products you are using could potentially interact with each other. A product that works for one person could create problems for another, depending on allergies or medications.

Some ingredients may make medications less effective, as well. In these instances, a natural product may be quite unsafe. For this reason you may want to take the time to learn how different products effect you. You may even want to discuss things like this with your doctor. They can help you know what you are allergic to as well as how different products can affect your health. Seeking help from a medical professional is definitely never a bad idea.

The bottom line is that some natural products are safe and healthy options while others are not. It is important to read the ingredients on every product and understand what they are as well as the effects that they can have on you and your family.

Online research, a call to the doctor or a visit to your pharmacist can tell you whether a particular product is safe for you and your family. Educating yourself while taking into account your own health history and medications are the only way to truly evaluate a natural product’s safety.
