Yoga Class

Yoga provides you with the opportunity to exercise your body and your mind. With its rise in popularity comes some drawbacks — there are plenty of yoga classes that are not worth your time. You will get the most out of your yoga experience by finding a good yoga studio — by finding a place where you feel comfortable.

Here are a few things you should consider in your hunt for your yoga studio:

1. A Comfortable Environment

When you’re researching yoga studios, you’ll want to find a place where you’ll be comfortable. Part of yoga is getting into a good state of mind, so you want to find a place that reflects that. A well-designed yoga studio will generally have wooden floors, plenty of open space and a calming color scheme.

Keep in mind your own personal preferences when searching for your ideal yoga studio. Many yoga studios use candles; however if you’re sensitive to certain scents or smoke you should avoid those studios. Additionally, if you prefer to do yoga in a small building instead of a large office building, complete with precast concrete walls, then focus your search to studios that offer that.

The most important part to remember is you need to feel comfortable and relaxed here. Visit numerous yoga studios in your area to find the place that’s right for you.

2. Quality Teaching

Finding a studio with nice aesthetics is only half the search — you’ll need a teacher who will keep you focused and engaged. A passionate teacher is a good first sign, but there are other qualities you should search for in your yoga instruction.

The only way you’re able to complete some of the more difficult yoga poses is if you’re calm and relaxed. Your yoga instructor should be able to maintain the tranquility necessary in a yoga class. The teacher’s voice shouldn’t be loud or sharp, but instead smooth and serene. Your yoga routine should challenge you — however, a good yoga instructor will know how far to push his or her students and what can or cannot be done by the class.

One of the biggest factors in a yoga instructor’s qualifications is the energy he or she exudes. If your yoga instructor is just going through the motions, no one gains anything from it. Instead, your yoga instructor should be high-energy and motivated. That sort of mentality is contagious, especially coming from an instructor.

3. Research That Backs It Up

There are plenty of different types of yoga, each suited to different wants. Some types of yoga focus more on the physical aspects, such as the intense power/hot yoga, which takes place in a heated room and more physical practice. Other classes are focuses on the spiritual aspect, such as Kundalini or Anusara. Make sure to ask about the various types of yoga techniques offered at the yoga studio and find the one that’s right for you.

As another note, you’ll want to verify that the studio offers classes at times that you can attend. It doesn’t matter if the studio has a great environment and wonderful teachers if the classes are offered during the day while you’re at work.

4. Find the Studio That Fits into Your Life

Regardless of whether you are just starting yoga or have been an active participant for years, you’ll get the best experience when you find a place that feels comfortable to you. Finding the perfect studio can take a lot of research or it can happen on the first try. When you find a studio where you feel comfortable and relaxed before, during and after the yoga session, you’ll know that it’s the one for you.
