These days, the wellness industry is flourishing as more and more people seek viable solutions that will enable them to lead healthier lives. While there are a plethora of health strategies individuals can implement to accomplish this objective, the practice of yoga can be particularly beneficial.
And while there are several different forms of yoga that an individual could engage in, for the purpose of optimizing health, yoga nidra is particularly beneficial. Although defined broadly, this form of yoga typically involves getting in a “lying down” position and subsequently being led through several breathing exercises by a trained instructor.
Individuals who are preparing to begin this form of yoga should note that there are several things they can do to get the most out of it. Some of them include:
This may sound like a strange piece of advice given that many people opt to practice this form of yoga in order to get into a mode of deep relaxation that precipitates health. However, optimizing your health requires much more than doing the conscious meditative work involved in this type of yoga. In addition to relaxing and thereby limiting or entirely eliminating stress this way, individuals seeking optimal health must also engage in consistent cardiovascular activity.
There are several different forms of physical activity that one can engage in, including kickboxing, swimming, running, and cycling. When one couples this type of physical activity in conjunction with restful, meditative yoga, optimal health can be achieved.
2. Mind Your Hygiene.
Practicing good hygiene habits is always important, but it can be especially important if you’re preparing to take a group yoga class.
In many cases, individuals assume that because nidra practices don’t involve a great deal of movement and sweating, they don’t have to pay special attention to things like brushing their teeth right before class and using sufficient quantities of deodorant.
Yet people need to do all of these things if they will be taking a group yoga class because the exercises will often involve people lying down in close proximity to other individuals. Since this is the case, be sure to practice excellent hygiene before attending a class.
3. Bring Your Water Bottle and Mat.
Although people may not think that they’ll grow thirsty from doing simple meditative yoga exercises, they likely will. This type of mental work requires extreme concentration that oftentimes involves utilizing a substantive amount of energy.
Moreover, numerous health experts advocate drinking several ounces of water every few hours, meaning that keeping a water bottle present at all times is important and advantageous.
Yoga practitioners should also remember to bring a mat with them if they plan to practice this form of yoga in a group setting. Oftentimes, the yoga room will already have all the equipment one needs, but this is not always the case. Therefore, bringing a mat can preclude practitioners from experiencing the discomfort that would result from having to practice nidra on a hard floor surface.
Although the aforementioned list is certainly not exhaustive, it does include several strategies people can implement to successfully prepare for their yoga nidra class. Some other techniques to try would be to practice consistently in order to avoid the sense of frustration that might result from performing the activity less than perfectly.
Practitioners of this yoga exercise should also consider the great value of getting a partner to work with them on perfecting their breathing and meditation exercises.
When people implement some or all of these strategies into their yoga practice, they will likely find themselves undergoing exponential improvements. The end result of this effort will be the ability to lead a much more productive, positive life.
