Detox sounds painful.

You’re going to “rinse the spine,” “cleanse the liver,” “massage your organs,” and “flush the kidneys.” I know I’m not the only one who finds these things a little intimidating, but often wonder if they’re necessary. We tend to think of detoxing as a cure-all for whatever we’ve done to our bodies. But! Our bodies can’t do their job if we have poor circulation, or gunk build up. That’s where detoxing yoga comes in.

Yoga teacher Amanda Upton of Root Down Coaching gave us some wonderful poses that we can do to help get back on track. While these yoga poses are not a remedy for drinking too much over the weekend, they will help get your blood flowing. When practiced properly, these asanas strengthen your muscles, massage your organs, and improve circulation.

Balasana (Childs Pose)

“While calming to the nervous system,” Amanda says, “this pose also enhances blood flow to the lunges, which improves oxygenation.”

Adho Mukha Svansana (Downward Facing Dog)

“This pose brings our heart higher than our head, which aids in circulation of blood as well as calms the mind,” says Amanda. “The abdomen is also toned, which gently stimulates digestion.”

“Unwinding from this heat-building pose flushes oxygen-rich blood through your torso and digestive organs,” Amanda explains, “helping to remove toxins and at the same time improve digestion.”

“This delicious pose squeezes and massages the abdominal organs, including the liver and kidneys, which are the top dogs when it comes to detoxing,” Amanda explains. “The massage of the organs stimulates digestion and elimination.”

“This restorative pose does wonders for the body” says Amanda. “Not only is it calming to our nervous system, it also massages the internal organs and tissues in and around the mid-section of the body, which tend to be a holding place for toxins.”

“This ultra restorative pose encourages circulation of blood and lymph from the feet and legs. It bathes the abdomen in fresh blood, stimulating the digestive organs and allowing toxins to move through the system with ease,” Amanda concludes. “It also soothes the nervous system and gently relieves stress from the mind and body.”
