Getting started with a home yoga practice can be really challenging, especially if you’re new to yoga. But it doesn’t have to be. Keep these 5 simple tips in mind, and you’ll be down dogging in no time.
1. Start a yoga journal
Don’t start *reading* Yoga Journal, start a yoga journal. A yoga journal is a place where you can log your yoga practice. My yoga journal includes the date, what video I was doing or what class I went to. What asanas I had a problem with, and what ones I finally conquered. I also make notes for what I want to focus on next time.
I find practicing in front of a mirror to be painful but helpful. The mirror allows me to really take a good look at my body, and see what I’m doing wrong. It also means I can be really judgmental about my body. Judgement is anti-yoga. 🙂 If you’re going to use a mirror to help your note taking process, try to see yourself with love and kindness. If you don’t think you can use a mirror without harshly judging yourself, skip the mirror all together.
2. Find a quiet place
When you’re first starting out, you may not be comfortable with whoever you live with seeing your first attempts at yoga. Find a quiet, private place to practice and keep those potentially embarrassing moments to yourself.
3. Find some great yoga videos
The internet is stuffed full of yoga videos and people keep on makin’ em. Find the best free yoga videos and start practicing. The benefit of using videos at home is you hit pause and adjust as you need to. It can be hard to keep up with an instructor in a yoga classroom.
4. Collect the right stuff
You don’t have to have the fanciest mat on the market, or invest a lot of money in yoga clothes. You’ll at least need:
- A yoga mat
- A strap
- A block
- Some comfy clothes that allow for a full range of motion
That’s it! What kind of clothes you wear, what kind of yoga mat you get, that’s all up to you. If you’re not sure you want to stick with yoga, you can head to Walmart and pick up a $10 yoga mat. If you like yoga, and want to make it a bigger part of your life, you can always upgrade your mat to something more durable.
5. Patience, patience, patience
While real estate is all about location, location, location, yoga is all about patience, patience, patience. After your first serious yoga practice, you might be sore. But that’s a good thing! It means you’re working all those muscles you forgot you had. There will be challenges, but if you keep at it (and keep tracking your progress) you’ll soon see how far you’ve come.
Try to just be in your yoga practice. Acknowledge what you’re doing, and flow past it without judgement.
You have to be willing to listen to your body and give it what it needs. Your body might be telling you to quit drinking soda even though your brain might still be addicted. Be patient with yourself, and listen to your body. You’ll grow as a yogi and a human in no time.
