For the first time the USA Yoga New York Regional Championship was held outside of New York City.
28 yogis from all around New York State competed in the 2015 USA Yoga New York Regional Championship this past Saturday, with more than 100 fans in attendance.
Each yogi was given three minutes to do seven asanas. Four of the asanas were required, and the remaining three were electives chosen by the yogi. Before each asana, the yogi announced what pose they were doing. A yogi was considered successful if they hit the pose quickly and were able to hold it, all while looking comfortable in their yoga practice.
Roxanne Janecki, the owner of Bikram Yoga Binghamton, placed 2nd in the competition. Roxanne is largely responsible for the competition being held in Binghamton this year. “[I] pretty much called every single day until we got the bid. And I think persistence paid off,” Roxanne told WITV News.
The event, which is a qualifier for the USA Yoga National Championship, was hosted by Bikram Yoga of Binghamton and took place at the Doubletree hotel in Binghamton.
The winners from the event will move onto the 2015 USA Yoga National Championship. Three of the six yogis from the Binghamton area placed high enough to move onto the national championship. The USA National Championship is also going to take place in Binghamton, and scheduled for May 1st-3rd at the Holiday Inn Downtown. More than 200 yogis are expected to compete.
