Chair Yoga Dance, Seated Chair Zumba Fitness.
I’ve been teaching Zumba Fitness since 2010. Initially took it so that our facility could host a training. Not sure at the time of signing up if I’d teach. Some in the class asked, are you going to teach Zumba Fitness? I said I’d try at my church. That is what I did. I taught twice a week for over a year at my church and helped raise over $10,000 to go toward outdoor playground equipment. I’d sub here and there afterward, but it was when I was at the spur of the moment, asked to do a program for a local Aggie Moms Club, and I had them do the routines seated on the chair.
It was a hit! I then started implementing more and more seated cardio dance routines into the Adaptive Yoga for Multiple Sclerosis weekly chair yoga class. They loved it! I then taught this at a local gym for a while and continued for over 10 years to teach it for my MS folks. Fast forward through the pandemic, and I taught it online through Zoom, and Facebook Live.
I now sprinkle seated chair dance fitness in my weekly classes at the local Senior Citizen Center. Sometimes a whole class worth, other times 1 – 3 songs intertwined with either seated chair tai chi or chair yoga class. My student really like those classes, singing along, moving to the music, big-time smiles on their faces!
During the pandemic, I took Yoga Vista Academy’s Chair Yoga Dance, and even learned more about breaking down the music, and the importance of pre-teaching movements prior to the actual getting into the music movement of the song. I finished the course in two and 1/2 weeks’ time (as I had already been teaching this format for a long time), but I just gobbled up the coursework, and enjoyed it so much!
